Hybrid Rollups: The Best of Both Worlds

Hybrid Rollups are a unique blend of two types of rollups: Optimistic Rollups and Zero-Knowledge (ZK) Rollups. They aim to address the shortcomings of both rollups by leveraging their strengths.

By preserving the Optimistic Rollup architecture, Hybrid Rollups offer Ethereum developers an easy-to-code-in blockchain. They also implement zero-knowledge proof to the optimistic rollup architecture, which reduces transaction finality time from 7 days to approximately 4 hours.

Hybrid Rollups also enhance security by using validity proofs to ensure the correctness of off-chain transactions and prevent operators from executing invalid state transitions. They increase throughput by removing the need for extra data, each transaction holds only the minimum required.

Moreover, Hybrid Rollups offer greater capital efficiency, allowing users to withdraw funds from Layer 2 without delays. They also encourage decentralization by processing all transactions in parallel.

ZKM’s Implementation: Aiming for Universality

ZKM is working towards implementing Hybrid Rollups. With funding from the foundation that oversees the development of Metis, a Layer-2 Ethereum protocol, ZKM aims to make Ethereum the “universal settlement layer for all blockchain and non-blockchain applications”.

ZKM’s hybrid rollup will allow the Layer 1 chain to implement instant transfers from the Layer 2. This means that all users in the Metis ecosystem will benefit from instant, no-limit asset transfers.

ZKM aims to improve existing Layer-2 networks, such as Metis, with the goal of making its roll-up compatible with other Layer-1s.

In conclusion, Hybrid Rollups represent a significant advancement in blockchain technology, offering a solution that combines the scalability of Optimistic Rollups with the security and finality of Zero-Knowledge Rollups.

With organizations like ZKM working towards their implementation, the future of blockchain technology looks promising.
